“IP is Dead, Long Live IP for Wireless Sensor Networks”

So this paper really got me! It is an answer to a question I recently asked myself. Which standard will make it for the smart home? (For sure there will be ton of standards! And we will all need them!) But as it seems, sensor networks don’t really differ too much from regular IP networks, when only considering layers above the link layer. Fro WSNs 802.15.4 has evolved as a de-facto link layer standard. The question now is, what comes directly above?

In “IP is Dead, Long Live IP for Wireless Sensor Networks” the authors present a complete implementation of a wireless network stack which is compatible with IPv6. This allows developers to address any sensor node on the world homogeneously using an IP address!

Remains the question, which transport protocol to use. TCP and UDP are well established. But it is arguable, if they are good candidates for sensor networks.
