An interesting direction the IoT community is taking, is to supply every device with an IP address. Obviously it makes sense, since a device needs to speak IP in order to be part of the Internet. However, the question I am asking, is, if we then still can speak of an Internet of Things. After all we are not talking aboutn a Internet of Mobile Phones, or an Internet of Servers, or an Internet of Laptops, but merely of the Internet.
The reason why this plays a role, is because such an Internet of Things, which goes far beyond RFID or local sensor networks, not only inherits all the goods from the Internet but also the bads. Any device with an IP address can become victim of the same attacks which are carried on the Internet on a daily base.
Independent of that, my opinion is that the IPyification of everything will bring some major technological downsides. But nevertheless this approach will succeed, mainly due to a lack of alternatives.
